There are many types of braces, the following advice will help you deal with most common issues arising with braces during treatment. It is quite normal after the fitting or adjustment of your brace to experience discomfort which increase for two to three days, this eases during the week after braces or retainers are fitted/adjusted. If eating is uncomfortable eat soft foods and use of a mild analgesic for the first few days to aid your comfort.
The brace rubbing and irritating the skin of the mouth is the most common problem, especially after the braces are placed.
The Solution is to place wax opposite the ulcer on the brace. This may need to be repeated several times. If you have an ulcer, warm salty mouthwashes, four times a day for five days can be useful.
A common problem in the early phases of treatment is that the flexible wire used may come out of the very back band/bracket during chewing, irritating the cheek.
Solution 1
Simply pinch off a small of orthodontic wax and roll it into a ball the size of a small pea. Place over the end of the wire against the bracket or tooth.
Solution 2
IF YOU HAVE JUST STARTED TREATMENT AND HAVE A FLEXIBLE WIRE ONLY, You could attempt to guide the wire back into the tube with a clean pair of tweezers.
Orthodontic relief wax should be placed to provide additional comfort to the irritated area. If you have an ulcer, warm salty mouthwashes, four times a day for five days can be useful.
Solution : If the Ligature end stick out use a cotton bud to try to tuck it towards the tooth and bracket.
This is typically not an emergency that needs immediate care. In this instance, clean around the loose bracket(s), or remove it from the wire. Inform the practice the bracket has come off so that they can check they have adequate time to repair the brace.
